[apnic-announce] Whois v3 is coming
[Note "reply-to:" field]
Dear Colleague,
APNIC is pleased to announce that the Whois database will be upgraded on 20
August 2002. The new database, using RIPE v3 software, will provide many new
features:
- Enhanced syntax checking
- Better security features
- Improved response time and reliability
- More query options
- Integrated Internet Routing Registry (IRR) service
- RPSL compliant database*
*RPSL (Routing Policy Specification Language) is an Internet standard
notation for representing Internet routing information.
How will Whois v3 affect you?
-----------------------------
Most users should not be affected by the Whois v3 upgrade. Advanced users
may experience some changes. Most Whois clients will still be able to access
the new database, however, a new Whois client with v3 options will be made
available for download.
APNIC members will also need to change some procedures for updating the
Whois database.
Where to find more information?
-------------------------------
Announcements about the Whois v3 upgrade will be posted to the mailing list
for the Database Special Interest Group (SIG). Instructions for subscribing
to the mailing list can be found at:

APNIC will provide full details and further assistance prior to the upgrade
to ensure that database users are fully informed of the necessary changes.
