Dear SIG members
The proposal "prop-109v001: Allocate 1.0.0.0/24 <http://1.0.0.0/24> and
1.1.1.0/24 <http://1.1.1.0/24> to APNIC
Labs as Research Prefixes" has been sent to the Policy SIG for review. It
will be presented at the Policy SIG at APNIC 37 in Petaling Jaya,
Malaysia, on Thursday, 27 February 2014.
We invite you to review and comment on the proposal on the mailing list
before the meeting.
The comment period on the mailing list before an APNIC meeting is an
important part of the policy development process. We encourage you to
express your views on the proposal:
- Do you support or oppose this proposal?
Seems sensible, support it, to the extent that matters as I don't
represent any resources in the APNIC region.
- Does this proposal solve a problem you are experiencing? If so,
tell the community about your situation.
Maybe, would the intent be to formally make these prefixes available to
other researchers for general purpose Internet research? Or is the
intent to only research the traffic phenomenons associated with
1.0.0.0/24 and 1.1.1.0/24.
- Do you see any disadvantages in this proposal?
If these prefixes start to become considered Bogon prefixes by operators
and they start to be filtered, is there anything to research?
- Is there anything in the proposal that is not clear?
Should operators start filtering these Prefixes as Bogons or not?
- What changes could be made to this proposal to make it more
effective?
More information about the long-term intent for these prefixes would be
useful. The original stated intend was to monitor them to see if they
could ever be used normally. The conclusion seems to be NO! Which I
would tend to agree with. However, since we seem to be saying there is
"no hope" for these prefixes, a natural reaction by some operators would
be to filter them. Are we being asked to not filer them so they may be
used for research?
Some more specifics on the long-term intent might be helpful, especially
if you don't want operators to just conclude they should filer these
prefixes.
Thanks.
