Re: [apnic-talk] [Apnic-announce] Application for India NIR - Call for C
Just to give a background.
India is currently the fourth largest Internet population in the world, with more than 82million users. However it is the second largest country in terms of mobile penetration. Saying so it is also to be noted that the mobile internet subscriber base has crossed more than 125 million users. Thus the overall internet user base makes it to be one of the important decision makers in the Internet world. The expected growth in Internet demands more resources and better manageability. At the same time, cost is also primary concern in every resource that India needs, be it electricity or Internet.
NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) was founded with the grants given by government of India, and it's a NPO/NGO operated under the supervision of Ministry of Information Technology (MIT) of India. Senior members of this ministry represent the supervisory responsibilities by way of being the chairperson and few board directors. NIXI is also the registry of cctld .in managing more than 550K domain names.
In fact there are no other Internet exchange currently available in India. Hence forth all operating ISPs are directly or Indirectly connected to NIXI for domestic traffic routes. It also manages more than 75 domain registrars including international registrars like godaddy and Melbourne IT.
Financials, we can understand about the plenty of surplus it manages to have from http://nixi.in/images/Annual_Report_05_2008.pdf .
Government of initiative, organised managed by experts from Industry, NIXI is very much capable of being the NIR of India.

Thanks for that Sanjaya...
Well, we've seen zero public commentary... especially from this side of Asia Pac... I don't know if there have been any private/direct submissions.
I guess most of us down here wouldn't have too much insight into how the internet industry works in India and the stability of the organisations proposing to manage INNIC.
Is there anyone out there who does have such insight and give us people who don't know a little rundown of the internet industry/community over in India - even people from India itself...
I would like to hear that people in the Indian ISP community is happy with what is being proposed.
A complete lack of response, supporting for or against is a little concerning.
