Looking at the above whois client, it appears to understand the basic
RIPE-style query flags.  The actual RIPE whois client can be downloaded
from either ftp.ripe.net or
ftp.apnic.net/pub/apnic/dbase/tools/ripe-whois-tools-2.3.tar.gz

It is neither a syntax problem nor a problem with the APNIC Whois server.  
Your query will result in the appropriate route objects (and associated
references) which have 'AS7496' as the origin field, *if* those route
objects have been supplied to APNIC.

Route objects in the APNIC or RIPE databases describe intended routing
policies, and may or may not match the actual routes that are advertised.

For a look at the actual routing tables of the Internet, APNIC runs a
Looking Glass at http://www.apnic.net/lg.html , which understands standard
Cisco regexes (ie 'regexp 7496$' ).

As a matter of interest, AS7496 is the ASN of Powerup.Com.Au, which has
long been appearing in both the Tony Bates CIDR report, and Philip Smith's
BGP-stats report, as one which really needs to announce classless routes
(~53), rather than the current ~131 mostly classful routes
