[Apnic-announce] Call for EOI: support for APNIC POP locations
for the support of APNIC Points Of Presence
in the Asia Pacific region
In order to continue improving APNIC's online services to the Internet
community of the Asia Pacific, APNIC is establishing additional Points
of Presence (POPs) at suitable sites throughout the region. This is a
Call for Expressions of Interest from the Internet community to support
this important activity.
Introduction
------------
APNIC POP sites will house online services including reverse DNS, whois,
and www servers. Where suitable, sites may also be used to house anycast
instances of the DNS global root server "F", which are being established
by APNIC in conjunction with the Internet Software Consortium (ISC).
The establishment of APNIC services in suitable sites will provide
substantial Internet service improvements throughout the region, however
APNIC cannot take responsibility for the full costs of installation and
operations at every site. Hence, community support is vital to
ensuring that these new services can be widely and effectively deployed.
This document describes the requirements for APNIC POP sites, so that
interested organisations may understand the general intentions and
requirements of this project. Organisations wishing to express their
interest in supporting APNIC POPs may do so by following the guidelines
below.
Server Hardware
---------------
APNIC will supply all hardware for the services to be deployed,
including server machines, switching equipment and front-end routers.
All equipment will remain the property of APNIC, and all hardware
supporting APNIC services will be operated solely by APNIC. Root server
systems, where applicable, will be operated solely by ISC, under a
formal agreement between APNIC and ISC.
Local site operators will be asked to provide onsite physical support,
however there is no requirement for local operators to perform
maintenance on the systems themselves, and administrative access will
not be available.
Physical Sites
--------------
Suitable sites for the location of APNIC POPs will include Internet
exchange (IX) and peering points which offer a very high standard of
infrastructure and Internet connectivity. A maximum of one POP site
will be deployed in any major Internet country, economy or region, and
it is expected that the major IX or peering point would be chosen in
each case.
In terms of physical infrastructure and services, a candidate POP site
should satisfy the general requirements for root server locations, which
are described in section 3.1 of RFC2870. In order for a root server to
be deployed, POP sites must satisfy all necessary criteria specified by
that document.
To accommodate the complete range of services to be deployed, exclusive
use of a full-height rack is required.
Internet Transit
----------------
It is critical that distributed APNIC services are accessible by the
wider Internet communities around each POP, and not only by those ISPs
who may be directly connected to the host location. As mentioned
above, APNIC is unable to fund the ongoing operational costs of each POP
site, and is therefore seeking to obtain Internet transit from ISPs at
each site. It is not feasible for services to be deployed unless this
condition can be assured and maintained.
Proposals for the provision of Internet transit are welcomed from
individual ISPs, and also from candidate POP sites such as IXs,
providing that a suitable level of ISP support can be demonstrated.
Expressions of Interest
-----------------------
APNIC invites expressions of interest from organisations such as
Internet Exchanges and ISPs who are willing and able to provide support
for APNIC POPs.
Expressions of Interest should include details of the support which is
being offered, such as hosting in an IX or peering point, and/or
provision Internet transit services. Please provide as much detail as
possible, including physical infrastructure details, upstream and peer
network connectivity details, and bandwidth availability. Please refer
specifically to the provisions of RFC2870 in your response.
Please send expressions of interest to Paul Wilson, Director General, by
email to <dg at apnic dot net>
If any further information is required, please also email this address.
