[apnic-announce] Changes to APNIC Member Services - AS Number Requests
[Note "reply-to:" field]
Dear APNIC Member,
APNIC has been working on improving the procedure for obtaining Autonomous
System (AS) numbers. We have automated some parts of the evaluation
procedure with the aim of reducing the total time taken to process AS
requests.
The new procedure will involve parsing of the AS number request form,
giving real-time automated responses from APNIC regarding the syntactic
and semantic correctness of the submitted request form.
In addition to the parser, a web version of the AS number request form
will also be made available.
Both the web form and the AS request form parser will go live on Monday 1
November 1999.
Using the parser is not mandatory for the first 3 months of deployment
until 1 February 2000. For those who do not wish to make use of the
functionality, it will be necessary to include the following subject
heading in the subject line of the request:
Subject: [NO-PARSE]
(in addition to any other information such as Member name)
The existing text form "APNIC-66 Autonomous System Number Request Form"
will continue to remain available.
Current System
--------------
Currently, the process of obtaining AS numbers from APNIC involves the
following steps:
1. AS Number requests are submitted by email containing a completed text
version of the request form.
2. Syntactical and semantical errors are manually verified by APNIC staff
through an iterative process between APNIC and the requestor. The
turnaround time on mail received by the APNIC hostmaster is 2 working
days.
3. AS Numbers are assigned or rejected by APNIC staff.
New System
----------
With the new system, the process of obtaining AS Numbers will involve the
following steps:
1. AS Number request forms will be submitted to the parser via
web form or via email to <hostmaster at apnic dot net>.
2. If the AS Number request is submitted via the web form then it will be
parsed and the errors will be output during submission.
If the AS Number request is via email an automatic response will be sent
to the requestor's email address.
3. (a & b)
(a) If a request is not successfully parsed, an output detailing the
errors and requirements will be displayed (if the web form was used)
or emailed to the requestor in ascii format (if email form was
used). Errors should then be corrected and resubmitted.
(b) After successful parsing, the request will be forwarded to
<hostmaster at apnic dot net> and an AS Number can be assigned with minimum
delays.
Procedural Changes
------------------
There are no procedural changes as such because the same information is
collected, and checks will be conducted as previously.
More information regarding the AS number request parser and AS number
request web form will be available on our website next week.
We would welcome any feedback from members on the interface of both the AS
parser and the web form.
If you have any questions about this announcement, or about the new
system, please do not hesitate to contact us.
