[apnic-announce] Reverse DNS Delegation: Service Upgrade
[Note "reply-to:" field]
Dear APNIC Member,
As announced at the 1999 Annual Members Meeting, APNIC has been working on
upgrading our Reverse DNS management procedures. Our work on improving
this process is now ready for deployment, and this message provides an
explanation of the changes that will occur.
The new service will be available from Tuesday 31st of August 1999.
To assist with the transistion to the new system, the existing web form
for requesting reverse delegation will remain available for another two
months until the 1st of November.
Current System
--------------
Currently, the process of obtaining reverse DNS delegations from APNIC
involves the following steps:
1. DNS Delegation Requests are submitted to APNIC via
http://www.apnic.net/apnic-008.html
2. Delegation requests are manually verified by APNIC staff
3. Zone files are updated manually by APNIC
4. Name server zone files are reloaded once a day
New System
----------
With the new system, the process of obtaining delegations will involve the
following steps:
1. DNS Delegation requests will be submitted to APNIC via
http://www.apnic.net/db/domain.html or via email to <autodbm at apnic dot net>
2. Each DNS delegation request is automatically verified during submission
3. Each delegation request is recorded in the APNIC Whois database as
a "domain" object
4. Zone files are generated automatically from domain objects
in the APNIC Whois database once a day
5. Name server zone files are reloaded automatically once a day
As part of this process we have populated the APNIC Whois database with
domain objects generated from the current Reverse DNS zone files.
Initially all objects will be set to be maintained by APNIC. As delegation
requests are received we will modify the mnt-by field to point to the
relavent maintainer of the address space.
Procedural Changes
------------------
The web form you use to submit delegation requests has been modified to
provide a simpler interface with real-time validation.
Old URL: http://www.apnic.net/apnic-008.html
New URL: http://www.apnic.net/db/domain.html
The new web form will provide real time validation of your name server and
zone file configurations, greatly reducing the number of required
interactions with APNIC staff before before your delegation is accepted.
The procedures which apply after the delegation is submitted are now fully
automated.
New Features
------------
The new system to be implemented will provide the following additional
features:
o DNS Delegations are now visible via the WHOIS interface
o DNS Delegations are protected by mnt-by and mnt-lower hierarchy
o Automated processing of zone files providing faster turn-around.
o dns-wg at apnic dot net mailing list for discussions on delegation system.
Timetable for cut-over
----------------------
The cutover to the new system will be undertaken as follows:
1999/08/31 12:00 (UTC-10) Delegation requests queued
13:00 Current DNS data imported into Whois database
14:00 Zone file automatically generated from Whois database
14:30 New DNS Delegation request form deployed
15:00 Queued requests processed manually
15:30 New system live
If you have any questions about this announcement, or about the new system,
please do not hesitate to contact us.

Paul Gampe
