On 8 April 2005, AfriNIC received from ICANN formal recognition of its emergence as the fifth RIR.

Therefore, the APNIC EC has formally withdrawn the temporary APNIC policy for allocations to African economies within the APNIC region:

"IPv4 allocations for African economies within the APNIC region" http://ftp.apnic.net/apnic/archive/apnic-115-v001.txt

Economies in the AfriNIC region now seek address space from AfriNIC under the AfriNIC allocation policy:
