Update to the IPv4 Registry¹s Format and Content

This message has been sent to several lists. I apologise for duplicates. IANA has improved the format for the IPv4 Address Space registry. At the same time, the entries that were marked ³Various Registries² have been replaced with references to the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) that provides WHOIS and reverse DNS service for that /8 allocation. If you want to machine-process the IPv4 registry, the new fields are: * Prefix * Designation * Date * Whois * Status * Note where the Date will always be of the form ³YYYY-MM² and the status has the following possible values: RESERVED, LEGACY, ALLOCATED and UNALLOCATED /8 allocations that contain legacy assignments in them that are now managed by the RIRs have the text ³Administered by² in the Designation column. Legacy assignments refer to IP address allocations made before the RIR system was established. Reserved address space held by IANA does not have a date listed. The registry can be found at: http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space If you have questions about the structure of the new format, please send e-mail to iana(a)iana.org. Upcoming APNIC EC elections.

[apologies for duplicates] Hi All, For those of you not already aware, the APNIC Executive Council elections are coming up, due to close at the 25th APNIC Open Policy Meeting in Taipei (25 - 29th Feb 2008). David Hughes from Australia has been nominated for the EC and would make both for a great member to represent the internet interests of Australia, NZ, and South Pacific. There hasn't been an ANZ based person on the EC since Geoff Huston in 2003. Given the impending implosion of the v4 internet it's a pretty important time for the ANZ/ Pacific internet community to have a member on the EC familiar with the region and it's many challenges. David has a wealth of experience, and has been heavily involved in the APNIC and operator community in the Asia Pacific region for many years now. He is a most suitable candidate for this role. need help with darknet

My current situation is that it doesn't recognize the ipfilter command when I load it, and nothing happens when I try the tcpdump command... Another thing is that, we've access-listed everything to route the unnecessary traffic to the darknet... there's just no way to monitor using the the argus that sits on the linux box... I have uploaded the windows version of argus, and that seems to show everything going into darknet okay Below are my configs for darknet... please advise on how to continue... Reporting from Delhi - ICANN mtg

Colleagues, ICANN 31st Meeting now underway in New Delhi, India See http://delhi.icann.org/node/99 for schedule and agenda covered in the meeting. Today is "Constituency day" where the different elements of ICANN's supporting orgs hold their own meetings to discuss the latest developments and their positions on matters likely to be raised later in the week. Most are open to observers and will streamed live (audio/webcast/transcript) and I invite those interested to participate remotely and send comments via chat. Yesterday's highlights: Opening ------- We heard from the Secretary of the Department of Information Technology for the Indian Government who spoke of the enormous growth of the Internet in India. Access remained the single most important issue. The two issues foremost for India are IDNs and DNS security. Presidents report ----------------- Paul Twomey the President of ICANN said that the main topics of this meeting will be Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), new Generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs), the ICANN Operating Plan and Budget and the Joint Project Agreement (JPA) JPA with the US Govt. --------------------- Chairman Peter Dengate Thrush gave a presentation on ICANNs submission to the USG over the JPA midterm review. ICANNs view is that the JPA should be concluded. A Q&A session produced broad agreement that a debate on final transition needs to take place over the remaining 18 months of the JPA. GNSO/ccNSO meeting on IDNs -------------------------- An open session discussed the fasttrack approach to introduce a limited number of IDN ccTLDs. Both the Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO) and the country code Names Supporting Organisation (ccNSO) presented their views on the current status and issues. The Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) also introduced their perspective - that governments would be very protective of their country names but were relaxed about other TLDs. APRALO session -------------- The first of two sessions for the Asia Pacific Regional At Large Organisation, the meeting chose its chair and started work on position papers for various issues. Pacific Islanders at this event ------------------------------- Happy to report an increasing number of folks traveling from the Pacific Islands to an ICANN meeting. There are representatives from .PG, .FJ and .SB Their participation has been assisted through the ICANN fellowship program. and ALAC. Hi PacNOG members At APNIC's 25 Open Policy Meeting in two weeks, the community will be discussing a number of proposals related to the depletion of remaining unallocated IPv4 address pool. If your network will need more IPv4 addresses in the next few years, these proposals will affect you. In the lead up to APNIC 25, the community is currently discussing the proposals on the APNIC Policy SIG mailing list. Policy is driven by input from the community. So I encourage you to read the discussions to date and add your thoughts to the Policy SIG mailing list. We need to know what you want so APNIC policies best meet your needs. No LIR has been denied an initial IPv6 allocation purely because they did not have a plan for 200 assignments. - Given the linguistic diversity in the region, it would be good to clarify the words used to describe the initial allocation criteria. - A problem with the current IPv6 multihoming policy is that many networks filter out prefixes smaller than a /35. This proposal could fix that. - Perhaps suggest a change to the multihoming assignment policy rather than using this allocation policy process. - The obstacles to IPv6 deployment are the difficulty of actually deploying it and the lack of user demand. - Is it possible that organisations that are not established LIRs with RIR/NIR allocations will say this proposal discriminates against them? - IPv6 allocations within the APNIC region continue to grow, which could suggest that the barrier to allocation is negligible. - Actual BGP announcement of IPv6 allocations has not grown, which suggests that LIRs are not using the space after receiving it. IPv6 needs to be made usable for the LIR's customers. - Perhaps remove the proposal's requirement to be an existing LIR with RIR/NIR allocations and allow any LIR with a plan for IPv6 assignments or sub-allocations to receive an initial IPv6 allocation. - It is possible that if the proposal was implemented, any organisation that asks for an initial IPv6 allocation will qualify? - Maybe IPv6 initial allocation criteria should mirror the IPv4 initial allocation criteria . - Maybe a criteria based on a scale, such as the HD-ratio, could be used by LIRs to justify an initial IPv6 allocation. - Proposal authors suggest amended alternative criteria: - Be an existing LIR with IPv4 allocations from an RIR/NIR AND have a plan for making assignments and/or sub- allocations to other organizations within two years. The LIR should also plan to announce the allocation as a single aggregated block in the inter-domain routing system within two years.
