APNIC on the Bali IGF
________________________________________________________________________
The last few weeks have seen uncertainty regarding the planned Internet
Government Forum (IGF) meeting which is scheduled to be held in Bali,
Indonesia in October this year.
There has been widespread discussion about the possible cancellation of
the Bali IGF for financial reasons, however we note that the event has
still (so far) NOT been officially cancelled.
On behalf of APNIC, therefore, I would like to reassert our commitment
to the IGF and our intention to continue preparing for active
participation.
So for all parties interested in the IGF, and especially Internet
stakeholders in the Asia Pacific region, I would urge you to continue to
plan to participate in the next IGF, while bearing in mind the
possibility of changed arrangements.
The IGF process relies on the whole community to pull together to
participate in meaningful discussions that meet its mandate.
APNIC has participated actively in the IGF since its inception. We have
been particularly committed to this year's IGF, which is taking place in
the Asia-Pacific region. We have also been supportive of the truly
multistakeholder IGF organizing committee in Indonesia and hope that it
can surmount its current financial challenges to enable the event to
take place as planned.
An important aspect of the recent developments is that they shed some
light on the IGF’s organizational structure and that it could benefit
from revision. We hope that the opportunity is taken to strengthen the
IGF model by ensuring the greatest possible level of transparency for
future event planning in all aspects of its design, budgeting, planning,
and implementation.
APNIC, alongside many other members of the community, eagerly
anticipates good news about the next IGF - with confirmation of
arrangements in Bali - to enable attendees from this region and beyond
to finally confirm their own arrangements to join a successful and
valuable event.
We do look forward to seeing you in Bali!
Paul Wilson
