APNIC Executive Council unanimously supports Montevideo Statement

The APNIC EC resolves to adopt the following statement on the Montevideo
Statement and proposed follow-up activities.
APNIC is a signatory to the "Montevideo Statement on the Future of
Internet Cooperation", which was issued in October 2013 after a meeting
among Internet technical organizations.

The Montevideo Statement was signed by the heads of the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet Architecture Board (IAB),
the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the Internet Society (ISOC), and
the five regional Internet address registries (African Network
Information Center (AFRINIC), American Registry for Internet Numbers
(ARIN), Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), Latin America
and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC), and Réseaux IP
Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC).
At its meeting on 6 December 2013, the APNIC Executive Council (EC)
unanimously resolved to ratify and support APNIC's position, as stated
in the Montevideo Statement.
The Montevideo Statement addresses issues that are important to APNIC
and to the future of Internet operations. These include the future
performance and configuration of IANA, the broader environment of
technical coordination and cooperation of which APNIC is a member, and
the deployment of IPv6.
Regarding the first point, the primary interest of APNIC is in the
ongoing stability and reliability of the global number registry
functions, which are provided by IANA. These registries must continue to
be operated in a manner that complies with the global policy development
processes of the Internet community, and which responds to the concerns
of the Internet technical and broader communities.
APNIC supports the operation of IANA's global number registry functions
by ICANN, as a proven arrangement, which has met the needs of the IP
addressing community very well for some 15 years. We would seek greater
transparency in this arrangement, by establishing an improved agreement
with ICANN under which specific IANA functions will be provided.
APNIC is also interested in ICANN's ongoing development as a robust and
trusted organization that enjoys the support of the broad
multistakeholder Internet community. It should continue its evolution
towards a globalized structure that places no government or other party
in a privileged position.
APNIC recognizes and affirms the multistakeholder nature of Internet
coordination, cooperation, and governance, and supports the Internet
Governance Forum (IGF) as the agreed venue for these matters to be
advanced.
The IGF provides an important platform for outreach and engagement with
our own stakeholders, and also for technical community expertise to be
brought to bear on discussions wherever it is needed. The healthy
functioning and evolution of the IGF is important to us, to ensure that
the IGF does remain the recognized venue for such discussions.
Finally, on the important question of IPv6, the APNIC EC is happy to see
ongoing progress in IPv6 deployment globally, and remains committed to
actively supporting IPv6 until there is no doubt of success in the
global deployment effort.
The APNIC EC hopes to hear from members of the community on these
issues; through the forthcoming APNIC conferences where they will be
discussed, and the next APNIC Member and Stakeholder Survey, which will
be launched during APRICOT 2014. We look forward to engaging with
members of the APNIC community on these issues.

APRICOT 2014 is moving to Malaysia
________________________________________________________________________
Following the decision to move APRICOT 2014 from Bangkok earlier this
week, APIA and APNIC announce today that APRICOT 2014 will now be held
in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Petaling Jaya is a satellite city of Kuala
Lumpur and is accessible via Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
While it was the strong intention of APIA and APNIC to hold APRICOT 2014
in Thailand, the announcement of a 60-day State of Emergency by the Thai
Government in Bangkok, advice from our local hosts, and the subsequent
upgrading of Thailand’s travel warnings by international governments
means that hosting APRICOT 2014 in Thailand is now not possible.
We apologize for any inconvenience this change in location will cause
for our delegates.
APRICOT 2014 will be held at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa in Petaling Jaya,
Malaysia. All registrations already made by delegates for Bangkok
remain valid for APRICOT 2014 in Petaling Jaya.
We urge all delegates to check their visa requirements for Malaysia as
soon as possible and if a visa is required, please contact your closest
Malaysian Embassy urgently to ensure your application will be processed
in time for travel.

Update on APRICOT 2014

APIA and APNIC have been monitoring the political unrest in Bangkok
closely in the past month and today the difficult decision has been made
to move APRICOT 2014 from Central Bangkok to another location.
APRICOT 2014 is still planned to be held on 18-28 February 2014. We are
currently assessing alternatives and a further announcement
will be made this week.
We appreciate your patience and ongoing support of APRICOT 2014.

Call for nominations to the APNIC Executive Council now open

Three positions on the APNIC Executive Council (EC) will be opened for
election at APNIC 37 in Bangkok on Friday, 28 February 2014.
The Executive Council represents the APNIC membership and acts in the
best interests of the organization.
The EC members whose positions are up for re-election are:
- Maemura Akinori
- Che-Hoo Cheng
- Ma Yan
Nominations are due by 17:30 (UTC +10) on Monday, 10 February 2014. Only
the APNIC Member's Corporate Contact, or an authorized contact with
voting rights given by the Member's Corporate Contact, may nominate.
Nominees do not have to be representatives of APNIC Members.
