I would like this forum to
seriously consider if APNIC fees be set in the currency in which the
majority of their expenditure occurs.
It seems to me that volatility of US$ vs.
AU$ is a significant or even majority component of the volatility of
revenue.
And besides it is prudent to attempt to
isolate income from currency fluctuations.
I am aware of possible counter arguments;
that US$ is the international trading currency de-facto, and that some
(especially poorer) nations experience more volatility with their currency vs.
AU$ than vs. US$.
I counter that 1/. though the majority of
the world's trading may be done in US$ this is no reason to continue this
position, and that trading based in many international currencies is very
common.
2/. I have seen no evidence that
volatility, historically is greater in AU$ vs. US$ and certainly in the last
decade I would dispute any such assertion.
Can other members of this forum indicate
their positions on this?

Chris
Dear all,
Please find attached a revision to the earlier
fee structure proposal. The
changes from previous versions include the
following:
- updated membership and allocation figures (to 1 November
2006);
- selection of an initial fee level which produces no change
in expected revenues;
- a proposed series of questions for a future
membership vote.
Please note that this is a personal proposal from myself
as APNIC DG. The
APNIC EC has reviewed this document and is considering
the next steps which
are appropriate.
I look forward to your feedback
on this important
issue.
Regards,
