[sig-ipv6] Minutes of APNIC23 IPv6 Tech SIG in Bali.

Dear APNIC IPv6 Technical SIG ML members,

Here is a minutes of our SIG held during APNIC 23 in Bali.

Presentation slides are available on the agenda web page:

Date: 28 Feb. 2007 14:00-15:30

Place: International Convention Centre, Bali, Indonesia

Number of Participants: about 60

We had 5 presentations (all of them were informational) and one
explanation about SIG guidelines.

The chair of IPv6 Technical SIG advised the 2nd speakers to bring
the GAP algorithm presentation to Policy SIG if they want to make a
proposal in the future.

We will have the chair election of IPv6 Technical SIG at APNIC24
meeting and the co-chair election at APNIC 26.

1) IPv6 status update
            Elly Tawhai, APNIC

This presentation is a semiannual IPv6 resource allocation report from
APNIC. The presentation included data on RIR allocation statistics,
APNIC allocation and assignment statistics, update of assignment
registration and global IPv6 routing table data. Chairs asked her to
include an information about the rate announced IPv6 routes versus
number of allocated address in APNIC region next time.

2) Evaluations of Growth-based Address Partitioning (GAP) algorithm
   with real data
Mei Wang, Cisco and Tao Chen from CNNIC

This presentation discussed alternative methods to allocate IPv6
address in RIRs/NIRs, focusing on GAP algorithms they propose. The
presenters covered the main problems dealt with in the project, such
as the need to reduce fragmentation and achieve route aggregation.
The presenters also detailed performance results using real APNIC data
of past IPv4 allocation, and software developed to provide simulations
of the allocation using GAP algorithms.

The chair and the Policy SIG chair advised to bring this item to
Policy SIG.

3) ENABLE: Enabling efficient and operational mobility in large
   heterogeneous IP networks
            Jordi Palet, Consulintel

This presentation discussed a project aiming to enhance IPv6 mobility
in large and heterogeneous access networks, and address basic mobility
issues in mobile IPv6 networks. The presenter outlined goals and
design principles for long-term evolution beyond IPv6.

4) IPv6 deployment status in Japan
Takashi L. Nakamura, IPv6 Promotion Council of Japan / Mitsubishi
    Research Institute

This presentation provided an update on IPv6 deployment status. The
presenter covered current government activities, and current IPv6
application services in Japan. IPv6 has been promoted and developed
within the Japanese government since 2000. This project has now moved
onto the next stage. In 2006 the IP reform strategy was
implemented. This project aims to make the government IPv6 compatible
by 2008.

5) IPv6 status in Indonesia
        John Sihar, IDNIC

This presentation outlined the status of IPv6 in Indonesia, and
current activities. IPv6 deployment in Indonesia is in the very early
stages. The IPv6 taskforce in Indonesia was formed in 2006. The
taskforce is working in cooperation with APJII and government
agencies. Major activities include encouraging telcos, operators and
manufacturers to implement and benefit from IPv6
technologies. Deployment of Indonesia's first IPv6 native network is
at a very early stage.

6) Draft SIG guidelines
        Kazu Yamamoto, SIG Chair

The Chair introduced the new draft SIG guideline, and asked all
attendees to read it. The Chair emphasized that this was not a policy
proposal and is valid from today. He also stated he will resign SIG
chair position next time to implement the "2 year cycle" and there
will be the chair election of IPv6 Technical SIG next time.

This draft minutes was originally written by Tina (thanks!).
