[sig-dns] IETF notes
The 69th IETF was held last week in Chicago, (Illinois,) US. For me,
it was a short duration trip, I only attended the IEPG meeting on
Sunday and three sessions on Monday and Tuesday before returning
home. So I am curious if anyone else on this list can add to my
report.
Unfortunately, my trip was even a bit shorter than I planned. My
plane arrived late enough that I missed half of the IEPG meeting,
which began with a DNSSEC talk from IANA. As of today, there are no
slides available on IEPG's web site, so I'll have to wait to comment
on this. After I arrived there was a talk by Rodney Joffe and John
Kristoff on open resolver statistics, the slides for this too are not
yet available.
A non-DNS talk I would like to mention is one by Randy Bush, for
which there is a URL:
http://www.iepg.org/2007-07-ietf69/070722.v6-op-reality.pdf. In
particular there are DNS comments on slide 23.
The ENUM WG was supposed to be meeting for the final time at this
IETF meeting, but the WG has found a reason to continue on and plans
now to meet in December (Vancouver, BC, CA). The one cross-WG
activity between ENUM and DNSEXT, the application for a new RR type
EBL, was dropped in favor of a DNAME-based solution. There was quite
a bit of talk about the enumservices application process in general,
a process that is necessary to be in place before the WG can really
shut down - or go into hibernation.
The DNSOP WG also met and is not showing signs of slowing down. The
WG discussed a number of active drafts. Most of the topics are
related to the management of DNS servers or trying to document past
practices. It is becoming quite apparent that there is a lot of DNS
folklore that has never been committed to documents. One of the
questions I raised was what did the group think needed to be done to
address the shortcomings of IPv6 in the DNS. For the most part, DNS
is capable of IPv6 support but still there are very few registrations
using IPv6. I asked - but there was no support for looking at this.
The DNSEXT WG did not meet and does not plan to meet. That group's
mailing list is mostly discussing how to say "we are dormant and are
not doing anything." When the only activity is to demonstrate your
laziness, well, it's time to retire I guess. ;)
I said there was a third meeting I attended, but that meeting
(SPEERMINT) has nothing to do with DNS.
The following weekend was the OARC meeting also in Chicago. I did
not attend that, perhaps someone who stayed for the whole IETF might
want to make comments on that.
Until I get more detail on the IEPG meeting or the OARC
meeting...BTW, APNIC 24 is being held in a month in New Delhi. See
this for more information:

Don't forget SANOG 10, held the same week in the same venue. There
won't be a DNS SIG specific meeting, but I hope to see as many of you
there are can make it.
