[sig-dns]progressing the APNIC Lame DNS sweep proposal

At the 15th APNIC Meeting held in Taipei, I presented a proposal to implement an
ongoing sweep of the lame reverse DNS records managed at APNIC. This proposal is
documented at:

 http://www.apnic.net/meetings/15/sigs/dns/docs/dns-pres-ggm-sweep-lame-dns.ppt

and

 http://www.apnic.net/meetings/15/sigs/dns/docs/dns-doc-ggm-lame-dns1.doc

Action item dns-15-001 from the 15th APNIC Open Policy Meeting refers this
proposal back to the sig-dns mailing list for refinement, in the light of
activities by other RIR and interested people.

I believe two different aspects of the proposal need to be explored, the
methodology for processing lame DNS sweeps, and the nature of DNS lame-ness to
be tested and acted on.

At the meeting, Ray Plzak from ARIN presented on the implementation of the ARIN
policy. The APNIC secretariat is reviewing the ARIN methodology used for
contacting domain holders prior to disabling lame reverse DNS zones (if there is
no response to the contacts) and we will propose a revised procedure for our
region shortly.

In reviewing the nature of lame DNS testing it has become obvious there are
also other pre-existing efforts underway, notably activity being undertaken by
Frederico Neves from LACNIC, Kenjiro Cho of the JPNIC/WIDE and Bruce Campbell at
RIPE-NCC.

All these efforts do not yet share a common methodology, or basis for defining
what is lame-ness, and which aspects of a lame DNS entry justify having that
entry removed from the global DNS.

Subsequent discussions have also noted that it would be in everybody's interests
to have a common definition of lame DNS, and to promote this in the dnsop IETF
working group.

I would like to ask the sig-dns members to help refine a working definition of
lame DNS, and to help us choose an appropriate mechanism for the next APNIC
meeting to adopt as an ongoing lame DNS sweep.

cheers
	-George
