'Video Volunteers' want to train NGOs to make their own videos

By Arvind Padmanabhan * News India-Times

Video Volunteers' wants to raise funds to empower non-government
organisations in developing countries, especially India, by teaching them
how to make video films and use them as a tool to alleviate poverty.

The program has been started by Jessica Mayberry, who produced promotional
films for Akanksha in Mumbai, I-CARD in ASsam and Self Employed Women's
Association (SEWA) in Ahmedabad, while she was in India for a program by
the American India Foundation.

Her program, she says, has the support of Creative Vision, a non-profit
organisation that produces documentatires on international humanitarian
subjects.

"One of the hurdles faced by NGOs in reaching out effectively to the poor
and their patrons is lack of communication skills. 'Video Volunteers' will
help in bridging that by helping NGOs make their own films," Mayberry told
News India-Times.

"Thanks to inexpensive cameras and computer editing, the cost of producing
videos is finally with the reach of grassroots organisations. Videos about
their daily activities can be a great addition not only as an educational
tool but for fund-raising and creating better awareness," she said.

Once commissioned by an NGO, volunteers of the program will visit their
facilities for two months to write, shoot and edit on eshort film.

Members of the NGO staff will also be trained, so that they can handle
future assignments on their own. A graduate of Oxford University, Mayberry
said she conceived the project when she visited India on a fellowship from
the American India Foundation in 2002.

Mayberry said she completed a 30-minute film for the organisation on
women-led initiatives to combat drought and wrote another about sectarian
violence in Gujarat. (ENDS)
