ANNOUNCEMENT OF
OPEN DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS MEETING

Friday February 6, 2003 SAP Falcha, Babarmahal, Kathmandu, Nepal
Organized by Bellanet Canada and SAP-Nepal


The Open Development approach is about supporting and creating an 
environment of sustainable information and knowledge sharing. Having 
a cultural environment that is supportive of open approaches leads to 
improved access to quality information and knowledge, and to more 
effective and coordinated development efforts.  

There is high need of providing assess of information to people. The 
country also faces sever challenges and constraints for ensuring good 
information flow. The most obvious need is to solve local language 
computing requirements. There are several other requirements. There 
is need of identifying present needs and develop strategies to meet 
demands of the people. In this context, SAP-Nepal and Bellanet is 
jointly organizing this OPEN DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS 
MEETING. The workshop will be participated by representatives from 
NGOs, INGOs, Government Institutions, etc. from Nepal.  

OBJECTIVES:  

The objective of the meeting is share experiences around the use of 
Open Source, Open Content, and Open Standards for effective 
information dissemination. It will help each other to get enriched 
with various technical and practical challenges of open development. 
It also intends to analyze what should be done and what can be done 
in collaboration amongst the participating organizations. In simple 
words, it will explore probability of future partnership for 
development by using approaches of Open Development.  

AREAS OF DISCUSSION: The meeting will share experiences and expertise 
on the following themes:  

- Overview of Open Development (Mr. Michael Roberts, Bellanet
International Secretariat, Canada)

- Open Source and Localization of Information, Communication and
Technology: Uses in Nepal (Mr. Amar Gurung, Madan Puraskar 
Pustakalaya, Nepal)

- Open Development Strategic Directions (Mr. Michael Roberts,
Bellanet International Secretariat)


RESOURCE PERSON:
Mr. Michael Roberts will be main facilitator of the meeting. He is 
Senior Program Officer at Bellanet International Secretariat, Ottawa, 
Canada.
