Gender, Technology and Development has scheduled a special issue on
'Gender in the Information Society' for publication in early 2004.
Unequal power relations in our societies have led to differential
access, control and participation for women and men in the
Information Society. This special issue seeks original field-based
research that debates this basic assumption through case studies,
pilot projects and gender analysis of project implementation.

Gender, Technology and Development is interested in exploring the
ways in which power/gender relations carry into the new world.
Articles that address the key issues and identify the problems and
challenges of the global information society are particularly
welcome. The economic, social, cultural, technological and policy
concerns of the information society may be subjected to intense
scrutiny through the gender lens to assess the gendered and other
social impacts in sustainable rural and urban development, employment
and poverty alleviation, education, human rights, access and control
over the benefits of ICT technology, and other areas that deserve
study.

Buzzwords such as e-governance, e-commerce, knowledge society/economy
and e-development are especially deserving of gender (class and
ethnicity) analysis. Case studies of successful and not-so-successful
attempts to empower the disenfranchised, especially women, through
the use of ICTs are also welcome.

Papers may range from 5-8,000 words and must be based on original
research. Articles based on field-based research are preferred. While
the global South is the preferred focus of our journal, we wish to
include articles that encompass a global perspective including North-
South dialogue.
