Encore-TVSE Simputers to roll out this month

BANGALORE: Encore Software will roll-out 1,000 Simputers, hand-held 
computers manufactured by TVS Electronics, later this month.

"We will have the first product by this month end. The initial 
production would be for around 1,000 Simputers," Encore Software 
Chairman and CEO Vinay L Deshpande said.

He said Encore and TVSE would jointly produce more Simputers based on 
response from customers.

The Simputer -- short for Simple, Inexpensive, Multilingual computer -
- was designed and developed by scientists of Indian Institute of 
Science -- Vijay Chandru, Vinay, K Hariharan and Swami Manohar, along 
with three members from Encore Software.

Encore recently entered into a tie-up with TVSE to produce Simputers, 
hailed as a technology innovation of the period.

Encore had a global launch of Simputer in Singapore in October last 
year.

Deshpande said that after the global launch, Simputers were sold to 
over 70 customers worldwide, including in India.

"The initial feedback is good. We expect them to place more orders in 
the next few months," he said.

Deshpande said Encore was working with IISc scientists to introduce 
new features and applications for Simputers.

"It is in the initial stages," he said.
