GUJAR KHAN – Distance Learning and Telehealth (DLT) clinic will soon
resume its telehealth services after initiation of the COMSATS
Internet service on Dece. 3. The telehealth programme had come to a
stand still in May due to inappropriate and inefficient Internet
service and unavailability of adequate bandwith required for
telemedical applications. The clinic, first of its kind in the
country, was established in January 2002 in Gujar Khan. It was linked
through Internet to the Tele Resource Centre set at COMSATS
Secretariat, Islamabad, where a panel of specialist doctors would be
available for consultation with the help of video-conferencing
facility. Dr Amer Masood, incharge of the DLT Clinic explained that
special devices had been developed for this purpose in association
with Dr Hanif Zaoq, PhD in electronic engineering and one of the
poineers of COMSATS, whereby a patient would be examined by the on-
line specialist as if he/she were present before him in Islamabad.
Such devices included Epscope, an alternate for stethoscope, an
Autoscope for examining ear, an Ophthomoloscope for eyes and an ENT
diagnostic kit. The specialist could directly view the computerised
images and results of Ultrasound report of the patient on his own
screen. He informed that preparation of modified e-version of ECG was
underway.
