Keltron to set up free software resource centre

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Keltron, the Kerala government-owned electronics
company, is setting up a resource centre for free software and open
source technologies here.
"This emerging technology will offer cost effective and transparent
solutions enabling the user to modify or alter the software without
resorting to the original supplies," a company release said here on
Friday.
The issue of security problems could also be avoided taking into
consideration the nature of data to be handled by government and
other organisations, the release said.
Five e-governance projects undertaken and implemented by Keltron in
Kerala are running successfully, with free softare and open source.
This include the web-based monitoring system for the directorate of
industries and commerce, Kerala Restructurning and Internal Audit
Board, KSIDC and KINFRA, PSU monitoring system, plan scheme
monitoring system, e-mail system for secretariat and server platform
for Keltron.
In a move to popularise the emerging technology, Keltron had started
internal training for all of its engineers in IT area on hardware as
well as software aspects connected with open source and free software
applications, the release added.
