Preparing the World Summit on the Information Society with Civil Society
Preparing the World Summit on the Information Society with Civil
Society
08/11/2002 (UNESCO)
An electronic discussion to prepare the second meeting of the World
Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Preparatory Committee (
Prepcom II, 17-28 February 2003): this is the project UNESCO is
launching, in cooperation with the WSIS Executive Secretariat, to
closely involve Civil Society in the Summit preparation process.
Actually, the proposed electronic discussion is intended to provide
input for the Summit draft plan of action to be discussed by Member
States during Prepcom II. This online discussion will be held from 1
December to 20 December 2002 and will be structured into thematic
forums primarily reflecting the issues contained in the outcome of
the Informal Meeting of Sub-committee 2 of the first Prepcom of the
WSIS. This forum will be open to a large number of organizations
working in UNESCO’s fields of action.
The actions launched by UNESCO to involve non-governmental
organizations in the WSIS preparation process have been initiated
through a series of consultations with civil society representatives.
These consultations were held either on a global level, with four
thematic meetings in February 2002 and a plenary session in April
2002, or at a regional level with an African NGOs consultation in
Bamako, Mali, in May 2002. The online discussion is the next step of
this consultation process.
