KARACHI: The Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) has trained
5000 federal government employees in IT skills under a programme
initiated by Information Technology and Telecommunications Division,
said a press release here on Friday.

The MoST had assigned the task of training to COMSATS Institute of
Information Technology (CIIT) which completed the training in a year,
the release said. The objective of the project was to teach IT skills
to federal government employees working in BPS-5 through 15 to enable
them to use computer technology for increasing their efficiency and
enhancing productivity of department.

The project was approved by the IT & Telecom Division in January
2001. After the approval, CIIT devised a well defined and transparent
system of implementation including selection of candidates and the
institutions interested in conducting the training, said the release
adding that an effective system of monitoring, reporting and
assessment was also devised.

All the secretaries of the division/ministry under the federal
government were asked to send nominees lists for the training course.
Later, the project was also advertised in leading newspapers to
invite applications from government employees through their
respective departments.

The training institutions were selected through an open system of
evaluation. Applications/expressions of interest were called through
advertisement in leading newspapers. A team consisting of
professionals physically visited each pre-qualified institution for
verification of services and infrastructure available at the
institution.

Giving details of the training programme, the press release said the
training was conducted in three phases. Each phase was of eight-
weeks' duration. In all 5,873 participants successfully completed the
training, which was conducted at 132 institutions.

The MoST availed of the professional experts' services in developing
course outline, methodology for implementation, schedules, paper
conduction and overall supervision and monitoring of the project in
the course of training.

The completion of project has enhanced the skill level of employees
of federal government providing computer-trained and computer
literate manpower currently managing their offices and secretarial
affairs of respective ministry/division.

The ministry hopes the project would have a long ranging catalytic
impact and help in launching new initiatives for efficient
implementation of e-Governance, e-Government and human resource
development in the country.
