1. Praxis Institute for Participatory Practices - India

Praxis, a locally-based non-profit NGO, seeks to effect change in
communities throughout India by focusing on democracy at a grassroots
level. The programme seeks to empower communities by conducting both
research and training that involves asking community members to
identify and address their own problems.

2. Computer Room - Nepal, Vietnam, & Cambodia

Room to Read launched Computer Room in May, 2002 to provide the
necessary funds to wire impoverished classrooms in rural Asia. 11
classrooms in Nepal and Vietnam are the first recipients of grants
under the programme. The goal of the programme is to close the
digital divide and increase computer literacy in developing nations
in South, South East, and East Asia.

4. Kalyani Television & Club Campaign - India

Doordarshan, the national broadcaster of Prasar Bharati (the
Broadcasting Corporation of India) has launched a 1-year campaign to
create awareness of diseases like tuberculosis (TB), cancer,
HIV/AIDS, malaria, iodine deficiency, and tobacco-related and water-

5. n-Logue Village Internet Kiosks - India

corDECT/WLL/n-Logue (n-Logue) is a national Internet Service Provider
(ISP) whose mission to provide services only in the small towns and
rural areas of India. n-Logue partners with a local entrepreneur, who
becomes a franchisee (or Local Service Partner, LSP) in the 2000-
square-kilometre area in which the company wishes to operate. n-Logue
works with the franchisse to set up the network infrastructure and
provide connectivity, training, support, and linkages to relevant

6. View from Bangladesh: The New Literacy - How communications
technology will bridge the Divide

This e-governance programme consists in the computerisation of 20
million records of 6.7 million land owners in 176 taluks (farming
communities) in Karnataka. Any farmer in the state can obtain a copy
of the Record of Rights, Tenancy and Crops (RTC), a critical document
of ownership required to secure bank loans, for a user charge of

10. From Dakar to Dhaka; Connecting Communities Radio Programme -
Senegal & Bangladesh

The BBC World Service Trust and the Department for International
Development (DFID) are currently working on a radio project to
address the issues of information communication technology (ICT) and
poverty reduction - particularly focusing on Senegal and Bangladesh.
The outcomes of the project will be three radio series (in French,
Bengali, and English), a video, and a website.

11. The Images in Social Change Network (Jandarshan) - Europe & India

In 2001, the Images in Social Change Network, known in India as
Jandarshan, or the People's Vision, completed a project whose broad
purpose was to develop the use of video as a means of exploring and
communicating experiences of social change. Now continuing on a more
informal basis, the network that this project helped develop consists
of organisations working in educational media, community media, and

12. "My Health: My Asset and My Right" - The Self Employed Women’s
Association - Gujarat, India

The Self-Employed Woman’s Association (SEWA) seeks to improve the
health of women workers in the unorganized sector. Using the
association’s funds, SEWA has developed a comprehensive health plan
that links economic empowerment, organising and holistic health

13. Impact Data - A Case Study of the Self Employed Women’s
Association - Gujarat, India

In 1998 SEWA’s services resulted in no maternal deaths reported, no
measles deaths in children, 92 % of women in districts reported
satisfaction with SEWA’s health services, 65 % reported savings due
to the low cost drug distribution system.
