Community Building Initiatives
Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) - Philippines
FMA will be using GEM on their Community Building and Content
Management (CBCM) Program. The objective of the project is to assist
the partner CSO communities of practice who have decided through
community websites to network their collective knowledge and install
and independently run their ICT-based systems and tools to help
achieve their community objectives in information communication. This
project has built online communities that regularly share and produce
information. Through this project, FMA conducts capacity-building
activities that promote ICT literacy.
Community Communications Online (c2o) - Australia
c2o will be using GEM to evaluate the Web Origami Kit (WOK)
initiative. WOK is an open source web publishing engine for non-
government and cultural organisations, which simplifies online
content management strategies and online collaborative workflows.
Through GEM, c2o hopes to be able to develop and promote WOK, taking
into account gender considerations in usability and access to the
application. The project targets ICT training programmes as well as
rural and regional organisations
ICT Training Initiatives
TARAhaat Information and Marketing Services Ltd. - India
TARAhaat plans to use GEM in assessing the TARAgyan, an initiative
that aims to build bridges for individual and community development
in rural India through the rural entrepreneur using ICTs. The project
further aims to provide quality education at an affordable price at
the learner's doorstep; to create learning centres for short
vocational, self-improvement and conventional courses; and to provide
instruction in the learner's language and in English. The target
audience of this initiative are people from rural market towns in
India.
InfoCon (ICT Consulting) Co. - Mongolia
InfoCon will be using GEM in their project called, "Introducing
Internet Based Distance Education to Mongolia". The aim of this
project is to initiate selected Mongolian institutions into the
processes of research, development and experimentation with web-based
instruction methods and technologies for distance education. The
project will investigate web-based instruction technologies,
pedagogical methods and organisational solutions for distance
education in Mongolia and help build capacities so that more
technology choices for distance education are available to the
country for implementing its nation-wide distance education system. A
parallel aim of this project is to encourage and facilitate the
educational authority within the country to formulate a vision and
strategic plan for technology-based distance education, within the
national education policy framework.
Women's Electronic Network Training (WENT) - Regional
WENT is an annual regional training workshop held in Seoul, Korea.
The project holders of this initiative are APC-WNSP and Asia Pacific
Women's Information Network Centre (APWINC). The workshops aim to
train women's information providers in the use of group
communication, web development tools, and databases to be able to
provide effective information and communication support to their
organisations, networks and localities. The WENT Training Team has
expressed interest in utilising GEM in order to assess what kind of
values are being promoted by the training materials.
Women's Networking Initiatives
Centre for Women's Research (CENWOR) Sri Lanka
CENWOR plans to use GEM in their Internet Based Information Network
initiative. The objective of the project is to contribute to a
process that would improve the situation of women in Sri Lanka and to
facilitate their empowerment in a context of gender equality, social
equity and human rights and development. Through the Internet Based
Information Network initiative, CENWOR will provide access to
research information and databases on women through the CENWOR
website as well as to monitor the implementation of the National Plan
of Action for Women in Sri Lanka. The initiative further seeks to
strengthen networking among women's groups and community based
organisations within Sri Lanka.
Corpcom Services for Mothers (Mothers for Mothers) Malaysia
Mothers for Mothers, a network of homemakers, will be using GEM to
evaluate an initiative called, E-homemakers. This project aims to
promote working from home through ICT as an economic option for
women. The initiative will provide ICT capacity-building for women as
well as to find employment opportunities for women that will allow
them to work from home, using ICTs.
Telecentre Initiatives
Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) -
Philippines
PCHRD is planning on using GEM for its project, "Connecting People
and Organisations for Rural Development through MULTIPURPOSE
COMMUNITY TELECENTERS (MCTs) in Selected Philippine Barangays
(Villages)". The project aims to develop and test a pilot information
and communication system (barangay telecenter) encompassing people,
organisations, infrastructure and processes that will support rural
communities in achieving sustainable development. Through GEM, PCHRD
hopes to assess the impact of the project on the community women as
well as on gender roles in the communities.
IT for Change (ItfC) - India
ItfC will be using GEM on a project called, "Sustainable Access in
Rural India - Information Technology Programme of Dhan Foundation".
The project aims to make information technology accessible to rural
communities in India developing relevant schemes through research and
pilot activities. In particular, ItfC will be looking into the
project in Madurai district of South India. Four computer education
centers have been set up to create a pool of computer literate people
in the villages.
