UNESCO Continues Consultations on Universal Access to Cyberspace March 22, 2002 - Universal access to digital resources and services for all countries and communities, and the preservation of their cultural and language diversity are the main themes of the draft international "Recommendation on the Promotion and Use of Multilingualism and Universal Access to Cyberspace" which UNESCO is submitting for a broad international consultation process. An expert meeting next week at UNESCO's Paris Headquarters is the next step in this process. The text of the recommendation under review is a call to all stakeholders, in both the public and private sectors and to civil society, to maximize ICT capacities so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of universal and affordable access to information and knowledge. UNESCO's Member States invited the Organization to prepare this Recommendation in 1997 and in November 2001 recommended to have further consultations on the text in order to submit it for approval to the 32nd Session of UNESCO's General Conference in October 2003. The results of next week's expert meeting (25-27 March) will be sent to all the Member States and relevant NGOs for comments and at the same time submitted to the review of the first session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Council for the Information for All programme in April 2002.
