9 April, 2001 Bangladesh deregulates telecoms Parliament in Bangladesh has approved legislation aimed at introducing greater competition to the country's telecommunications industry. The new law sets up a regulatory body -- to be know as the Telecommunication Control Commission -- which will assume some of the powers held until now by the state-owned authority ,the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board. The five-member Commission will grant licences to broadcasters, allocate frequencies and fix tariff rates. It will also adjudicate on complaints by subscribers and preside over internet communications. The Board will retain its authority over fixed- line telephone services. A BBC correspondent in Dhaka says the move is in response to the Board's failure to attract substantial foreign investment in the industry. >From the newsroom of the BBC World Service http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/south_asia/newsid_1268000/1268 644.stm
