May be shortening the AS-PATH prepend on the second provider will  
yield more traffic over your backup path, specially from those  
networks immediately connected (customers, peers) of your backup  
provider.

Massive (>3) can sometimes can have un-intended results as well,  
specially if the top of transit pyramid is only 2-3 hops away, which  
is not so uncommon when talking about satellite providers.
