The reality is that most of the tools I saw at: http://packetstormsecurity.nl/DoS/come as source code in perl or C. You should be able to read the code and understand what it's doing to the point that you are satisfied that the attack being generated is what you expect. So, yes, you'll want to verify for yourself that they work as expected.
