Hi Alex ,

Nessus will test for known vulns and the like, while nmap is a feature-built
port scanner. If you want to try seeing how to get around ACLs and the like
try hping and firewalk.

Hping is a command line packet assembler/analyser: http://www.hping.org/
Firewalk: http://www.packetfactory.net/projects/firewalk/

I've found both these tools quite helpful in pen-testing environments.
