[APNIC Members] News from the APNIC EC
A message to APNIC Members from Tommi Chen, Chair of APNIC Executive Council
Dear APNIC member,
As announced at the last APNIC Members Meeting, the Executive Council of
APNIC is now meeting on a monthly basis by teleconference, in order to work
more effectively in the fast changing Internet environment of the
Asia-Pacific. So far, 3 teleconference meetings have been held, and as
minutes of these meetings are finalised and approved, they are being posted
to the APNIC website for public information (at http://www.apnic.net/ec/).
Since the APNIC Members Meeting in Seoul, some important issues have been
resolved concerning the composition of the EC, about which I now wish to
inform you.
At the Seoul APNIC Members Meeting, Mr Takashi Arano was elected to the
APNIC EC, however at the EC teleconference of 7 April 2000, he formally
resigned from that position, in order to focus on his role as a member of
the ASO Address Council. The EC accepted Arano-san's resignation, thanking
him sincerely for his short term of service.
After a discussion on the need to fill the vacant EC position, it was
decided that in the interests of consistent representation within APNIC, the
EC should appoint a replacement member to serve temporarily, until the next
opportunity for direct election (at the next APNIC Members Meeting, in
October 2000). It was also resolved that the replacement to be elected
should be nominated by the same constituency from which the outgoing EC
member was elected (that is, from Japan).
After this meeting, I as Chair of the EC directly approached a number of
Japanese Internet industry representatives, who subsequently provided a
consensus nominee for election by the EC. The nominee was Mr Kazunori
Konishi of KDD Labs, Japan.
At the EC meeting of 22 May, Konishi san was unanimously elected and warmly
welcomed to the APNIC EC, to serve in that position until a direct election
by the APNIC Membership in October 2000.
The APNIC EC feels strongly that with its full complement of 7 members, it
is better able to operate and act in the interests of APNIC Members as a
whole. It also confident that the method chosen for making the appointment
was fair and representative, and the best course of action under the
circumstances.
However if you have any questions, please contact me by email to
<tommi@asiapac.net>.
I would like to announce finally that during the last two teleconference
meetings of the EC, Officeholder positions for this current term were also
decided, as follows:
Chair: Tommi Chen
Secretary: Che-Hoo Cheng
Treasurer: Geoff Huston
As Chair, I would like to congratulate my fellow office holders on their
appointments, and I look forward to working together with them and with the
whole EC in the service of APNIC.
Best regards,
Tommi Chen
Chair of Executive Council
APNIC
