UN-Led Commission Sees Needs In Internet Governance, Science, Technology
A commission under the United Nations charged with monitoring progress in improving science and technology in places where access is difficult and capacity to use that access scarce, concluded its recent annual meeting with draft resolutions on internet and society and on development and science. One notes that there is still much work to be done to bridge the ‘digital divide’ that creates disparities in access to information technology and knowledge in the world; the other calls on governments and UN institutions to find innovative ways to support innovative capacity.

Growing Pains and the Gandi Survey
As part of my job at ICANN… I have to read a lot of news clips. This morning, one headline in particular caught my eye: “Domain changes coming”. It was from Reuters and started: “Two thirds of businesses are unaware they will be able to use their own name in place of domain extensions such as .com, .org, or .net when Internet domains are liberalized next year, according to a survey.”

ICANN to U.S. Government: End Joint Project Agreement
Peter Thrush, Chairman of ICANN’s Board of Directors, has sent an eleven page letter (pdf) to National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) asking to end the Joint Project Agreement when it expires later this year. The letter was in response to NTIA’s Notice of Inquiry regarding “the transition of the technical coordination and management of the internet’s domain name and addressing system”.

King of my own (Internet) domain!
I have a dream. I dream of a place on the Internet that is all mine. A place – OK, it is a virtual place, but that doesn’t make it any less real these days – where I get to decide who gets called what, and I can make up as many names as I like without needing to worry about stepping on someone’s digital toes. Yes, I dream of owning my own global top-level Internet domain.

Dissenting opinion: ICANN and the JPA as "shadow of hierarchy" by Jeanette Hofmann
The future of the JPA has been subject to a lot of debate. Some people argue that the JPA should end in September, others think it should be extended once again. It is striking that the disagreement on the future of the JPA cuts across stakeholders and nationalities. This also true for civil society groups who have come down on both sides of the issue.

Confused Survey Finds Consumers Confused About New gTLDs
In a survey to gauge the British public’s knowledge of ICANN’s proposal to introduce new generic gTLDs, The Future Laboratory on behalf of domain name registrar Gandi.net, found consumers and businesses are not enthusiastic about the prospect while the survey also demonstrating its own confusion on what is happening, apparently not reading ICANN’s Draft Applicant Guidebook very closely.

An enlightened survey on new gTLDs? ICANN doesn't think so!
Have a look at the ICANN blog and you'll see a post by ICANN Director of Media Affairs Brad White. The post is about a survey commissioned in England by a registrar called Gandi. The survey, carried out by The Future Laboratory, questioned 100 UK businesses about the new gTLDs. The result, as touted by the survey, is that "Two-thirds of the 100 UK businesses surveyed are still unaware that liberalisation (of the Internet) is happening."

Lawsuit May Impact ICANN Debate
A California appeals court's reinstatement of an antitrust lawsuit against a firm that administers the .com and .net domain name registration systems could add a new wrinkle to the ongoing debate in Washington over the future of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and its relationships with various entities that have a stake in the security and stability of the World Wide Web. The unanimous 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last Friday will allow an Internet industry trade group to proceed to trial on claims that Mountain View-based VeriSign inflated the cost of domain names by engaging in predatory and monopolistic behavior. The court reversed an earlier ruling by U.S. District Judge Ronald Whyte, who dismissed the suit brought by the Coalition for ICANN Transparency (CFIT) four years ago.

Narrow Mission, Consensus-Based Processes Critical to ICANN's Future
CDT today laid out its most detailed roadmap yet for the transition to full independence of the body that oversees the Internet's domain name system (DNS). Since its creation in 1998, ICANN has operated under contract with the U.S. government. CDT has long argued that ICANN should be freed of U.S. control, but only if it is accountable to the global Internet community and protected from interference by other governments. In comments filed today with the Commerce Department, CDT set out five steps that must be taken before ICANN can become fully independent. Central among these is limiting ICANN's mission solely to matters affecting competition, security and stability of the DNS and requiring consensus among affected stakeholders for the adoption of ICANN rules June 08, 2009.

Domini personalizzati, questi sconosciuti

VeriSign sotto accusa: domini troppo costosi
