Internet Governance: EU Commissioner Reding calls for full privatisation and full accountability of ICANN as of 1 October [news release]
In a video posted on her website this morning, Viviane Reding, EU- Commissioner for Information Society and Media, called for greater transparency and accountability in Internet Governance as of October 2009. Key decisions related to Internet Governance, like top level domains and managing the internet's core directory, are currently made by ICANN, a private not-for profit corporation established in California. So far, ICANN has been operating under an agreement with the US Department of Commerce. However, this agreement expires on 30 September this year. For the time after, Commissioner Reding today outlined a new governance model for the internet. This would include a fully private and accountable ICANN, accompanied by an independent judicial body, as well as a "G12 for Internet Governance" – a multilateral forum for governments to discuss general internet governance policy and security issues.

Viviane Redding, the Information Society and Media Commissioner for the EC posted a video blog this week noting that the JPA between ICANN and the US Department of Commerce ends this September. In it she proposes that ICANN be overseen by a "G-12 for Internet Governance" with 12 geographically balanced government representatives from around the world. That's such a non-starter that I'm baffled that she would even propose it.

Indian firms may fall short of web addresses by 2011
The web is running out of addresses. Internet Protocol version 4 or IPv4 is the existing protocol that is used for Internet addresses. However, according to Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) — the body allocating IP addresses — there were only 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses of which, 68 per cent have been already allocated and 13 per cent are unavailable due to technical issues.

Europäischer IP-Adressverwalter schreibt "Kochbuch für IPv6"
Das RIPE NCC, operativer Arm der IP-Adressverwaltung Réseaux IP Européen (RIPE), kündigte beim Treffen der Adressverwalter in Amsterdam ein "Kochbuch" für die Implementierung von IPv6 an. Mit der Veröffentlichung komme die RIPE NCC Anfragen von Regierungen und aus der Wirtschaft nach, erläuterte der RIPE-NCC-Kommunikationschef Paul Rendek gegenüber heise online. Das Kochbuch soll neben den Hinweisen zur Implementierung auch aktualisierbare Statistiken enthalten, die einen Überblick über die aktuelle IPv6-Durchdringung enthalten. Ab Mitte 2012 können das RIPE und die vier anderen regionalen Registries weltweit nur noch IPv6-Adressen vergeben.

Network Address Translation (NAT, die Umsetzung von privaten IP-Adressen im LAN auf eine oder mehrere öffentliche, im Internet weitergeleitete IP-Adressen) unter IPv6 ist nach Ansicht mancher Entwickler nicht ganz so schlimm wie klassische IPv4-NAT. Das Übermaß an Adressen, das mit der Einführung von IPv6 zur Verfügung steht, erfordert nämlich nicht mehr zwangsläufig, dass viele lokale Adressen hinter einer einzelnen globalen IP-Adresse verborgen werden muss.
