Microsoft Collaborates With Industry to Disrupt Conficker Worm
Today, Microsoft announced a partnership with technology industry leaders and academia to implement a coordinated, global response to the Conficker (aka Downadup) worm. Together with security researchers, ICANN, and operators within the Domain Name System, Microsoft coordinated a response designed to disable domains targeted by Conficker. Microsoft also announced a $250,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for illegally launching the Conficker malicious code on the Internet.

Field Guide to the ICANN Reforms (Part 2): September 2006 Diagnosis: The GNSO Needs Fixing by Milton Mueller
The current round of ICANN reforms started in September 2006, when the London School of Economics Public Policy Group released a report assessing ICANN's Supporting Organization that makes policy for domain names. In its recommendations, LSE suggested that GNSO be restructured into three basic groupings: Registration Interests (registries and registrars), Businesses, and Civil Society. There was no way around it: in addition to some sensible but less controversial changes, ICANN’s own hired experts were proposing a major redistribution of power in the GNSO.

Year's First 7-Figure Sale Shows the High End of the Market Still Has a Pulse
The severe economic recession brought high end domain sales to a near standstill over the past six months, but just when the coroner was about to pronounce 7-figure sales dead, a blip showed up on the heartbeat monitor. Publicly traded TravelZoo breathed life back into the high end's body with a $1,760,000 cash purchase of Fly.com that was brokered by Sedo. TravelZoo said it will launch a new website on the domain this month.

Domainpulse: Neue Adresszonen ja, aber bitte nicht so viele
Eine Überfülle neuer Adresszonen könnte die Bedeutung der Domain verringern, fürchtet Christian Müller, CTO beim Berliner Hoster Strato. Müller rechnet mit bis zu 2000 Adresszonen. Zu Beginn der jährlichen Fachtagung der deutschsprachigen Registries (DENIC, nic.at, SWITCH) Domainpulse 2009 am heutigen Donnerstag in Dresden meinten auch andere der versammelten Experten, dass die teuren Gebühren der Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) viele potenzielle Bewerber abschrecken. Zwei- oder dreihundert würden es aber wohl werden, vermutet Tim Schumacher, Geschäftsführer der Domainhandelsplattform Sedo.

Registries planen für neue Top-Level-Domains, DNSSEC und IPv6

Weltweite Datenschutznormen - eine Aufgabe für die Vereinten Nationen?
Globale Datenschutznormen seien ein notwendiger nächster Schritt auf dem Weg zum besseren Schutz der Identität – so Thilo Weichert, Chef des Unabhängigen Landeszentrums für Datenschutz in Schleswig-Holstein (ULD) anlässlich der Fachtagung Domainpulse in Dresden. Weichert sagte, die Vereinten Nationen, aber auch internationale Standardisierungsorganisationen wie die ISO seien gefordert. Der Datenschützer widersprach damit entschieden Äußerungen verschiedener Unternehmensvertreter, die dafür eintraten, dass die Pflege der eigenen Online-Reputation vor allem Privatsache sei.

Voraussichtlich Anfang 2009 wird die Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) das seit Anfang dieses Jahres diskutierte Update für internationale Domainnamen ([IDN) verabschieden. Das zeichnete sich in den Diskussionen beim Treffen der Entwickler in Minneapolis in dieser Woche ab. Neu aufgenommen in die Liste möglicher Zeichen für Domains, die nicht mit dem ASCII-Zeichensatz arbeiten, wird dabei auch das in den bisherigen IDN-Standards (RFC3490, RFC3491, RFC3492) ausgeschlossene ß. Für Kunden de Länderdomain .de ändert sich vorerst aber nichts, es bleibt dabei, dass Domains mit ß auf die Variante auf ss abgebildet werden.

Russlands Präsident fordert kyrillische TLD
Wie mehrere Online-Dienste unter Bezug auf den Nachrichtendienst Reuters melden, fordert der russische Präsident Dimitri Medwedew für sein Land eine Top-Level-Domain in kyrillischer Schrift. Die russische Regierung ist danach offenbar besorgt, dass Russisch zugunsten anderer Sprachen, vor allem Englisch, im Internet an Bedeutung verliert.
