Taming Korea's Wild Wild Web by Katharine H.S. Moon, professor in the Department of Political Science, Wellesley College, and an Asia Society associate fellow.
In a society where over 97% of households have high-speed broadband access, the Internet has the power to make or break the careers of South Korean politicians and entertainers and to publicize the private lives of common individuals. Live Web-casts of political rallies and street protests, like those this summer against U.S. beef imports, are common. And “netizens” are vigilant in their monitoring of politicians and the press.

Newspapers will survive by changing, says Murdoch
Rupert Murdoch has dismissed suggestions that the internet will kill off newspapers, saying that industry doomsayers predicting their death were "misguided cynics". Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, which owns titles including the Sun and Times in the UK and the Wall Street Journal in the US, said that while other industries were embracing the web too many journalists took a perverse pleasure in mulling over the death of newspapers.

Fears over Australia's £55m plan to censor the internet
Won't somebody think of the children? This mantra is being used with great effect by the Australian government to increase its control over what Australians see, watch and do - all, ostensibly, in the name of protecting the nation's youth. And a scheme that amounts to censorship is coming closer: the government has said that it wants to start live trials of ISP-level content filtering before Christmas.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/nov/20/australia-internet-filter-censorship

The Labor Party's "Plan for Cyber Safety" is much like the itsy bitsy spider trying to climb the water spout. It popped out on a sunny day five days prior to the Federal election, got washed away with the first drops of public criticism, and crawled back into its hole to regroup. Once the rain had cleared, it attempted the climb again.

Why internet filtering is bad for business
As reported in SmartCompany last week the Federal Government is proceeding with trials of internet filters that will restrict Australian access to the world wide web.

Government internet filters are 'stone age'
INTERNET filtering will be catastrophic for local business and send broadband back to the Stone Age, according to one Coffs Coast IT consultant.

Your Turn: Censor this!
... A recent article on the SMH website finally riled me up enough to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard as the case may be). The story I am referring to is the Federal Government's planned introduction of an Australia-wide internet filter and the fact that they are misleading the public and ignoring all opposition to it by both experts and the community.
http://blogs.smh.com.au/screenplay/archives/020602.html
http://blogs.theage.com.au/screenplay/archives/011072.html
Your Turn: Nanny state
... There are legitimate concerns amongst the tech community regarding the Australian Federal Government's plans to introduce mandatory internet filtering. These concerns include limitations to free speech, censorship of legal content, degraded internet speeds, and false blocking of legitimate websites whilst letting through illegal sites. The ISP-level filters pose a massive technological and financial burden to ISPs and the government, but the Communications Minister Stephen Conroy is determined to pass this legislation with the backing of lobby groups such as the Australian Family Association and the Australian Christian Lobby, and Senators Nick Xenophon and Steven Fielding.
