Greater Transparency in Domain Name Pricing by George Kirikos
Tucows issued a press release today wherein they announced lower domain name pricing and enhanced services. The bigger change, which might set a trend for other registrars, is the greater transparency of the registry and ICANN fees relative to the fees charged by Tucows. Tucows? fees will be $3 per domain above the combined registry and ICANN fees.

Estonian Cyber-War Highlights Civilian Vulnerabilities
The online attacks against Estonia are being referred to as the first Internet war. If this "war" is anything to go by, simple folk such as you and I may end up as the weak links in our country's defense. Indeed, the attack's impact was not what we might have expected: It was the civilian infrastructure used by banks, ISPs and home users?not the military's?that was under siege.

Phishers Now Targeting Domain Registrars by Edward Falk
This is an issue of some concern and should be watched carefully: phishers are now trying to get passwords of domain registrants. Currently, correspondents inform me that GoDaddy is the target, but there?s no reason to think the phishers won?t expand to other registrars. Normally, phishers go after bank accounts or other financial information, or sometimes the online accounts of users so that they may send spam.

A Closer Look At The Monitors
If the old adage is true that what stands behind every good man is a woman, what stands behind every powerful organization? A committee. Almost all organizations that direct everything from software to soda pop, have an advisory or oversight committee behind them creating regulations, monitoring conduct, and making sure all the rules are followed. When reviewing registry domain names, there is a committee standing behind that process to make sure things happen in a fair and safe manner. That committee's name is ICANN.

Cybersquatting: Global problem, local solutions
Internet turned the word ?communication? into a multilingual commodity; as a result, we have seen big number of deals rising on this new digital state of things. ICANN Takes a Lick at Domain Tasting by Larry Seltzer
Opinion: Most people who hear about domain tasting are immediately horrified and ask why "they" don't stop it. But ICANN has more studying to do, and others find it in their own interest.
...
The bottom line of my read on the subject is that it would be easy to do something about tasting if VeriSign were interested in doing so. Clearly it's not. VeriSign obviously thinks that the cost to it of an enormous amount of adds and deletes in the registry is overwhelmed by the registry fees it gets.
