Lessons for the Internet Governance Forum from the IETF By Jeremy Malcolm
As Antonios Broumas has correctly observed, the IGF begins life in Athens next week without the means for its participants to agree upon any substantive documents such as resolutions or declarations. Indeed, according to Nitin Desai, the Chairman of its Advisory Group, it is impossible for the IGF to make any decisions, as it "is not a decision-making body. We have no members so we have no power to make decision."

ICANN’s “Data Valdez” - The Future of Whois Privacy Policy - Panel in New York City on 8 November
The controversy over ICANN’s “Whois” personal data policy, which conflicts with a number of national and international privacy guarantees, is the topic of an upcoming panel discussion sponsored by the New York Internet Society.ICANN requires Internet domain name registrants to publish their personal information, like their home address and telephone number on the Internet in its “Whois” database. ICANN’s policy has caused a lot of problems for people because spammers use the personal information, the data is used to engage in identity theft, to send bogus legal demands, and silence freedom of expression on the Internet.

Is ICANN Producing Jewels?
ICANN business is still predominately conducted on Email lists/forums. Email lists and forums are good at excavating. As ideas churn and churn, every now and then a gem glitters amidst the din. Unfortunately, gems that are discovered in email lists and forums remain obscured by all the crap that is unavoidably generated by collaborative thinking. In fact, as new people come to the list, often times the same crap and the same gems are recycled. Email lists don’t do a great job of sifting and disposal.

Judge lets ICANN off the hook
A US judge has pulled back from a conflict with Internet naming agency ICANN, averting a potential crisis over domain name management. Judge Charles P Kocoras has decided not to ask ICANN to suspend the doman name for Spamhaus - even though the British-based organisation has refused to pay the $11.7m damages owing to US-based email marketing company, e360 Insight. The judge said that ordering the suspension would "not correspond to the gravity of the offending conduct."

International Haus of Spam
Spamhaus is a well-regarded registry of bad actors. The British nonprofit, along with partner organizations, tracks the IP addresses that spew most of the spam issued forth worldwide. They also use honeypots and other mechanisms to keep a dynamic list of infected computers and IP addresses that act as vectors for infection. And they owe a guy in Illinois nearly $12 million due to a default judgment issued by a U.S. District Court judge when Spamhaus failed to contest a lawsuit.
