Internet's unquenchable thirst for power drives its evolution
There are rumours that the Internet, like the polar ice caps, might be breaking up. The warning came this week from Nitin Desai, the chairperson of the IGF, a memberless institution set up by the United Nations to "convene dialogue between stakeholders".

What Will Be the Outcome of the IGF Meeting in Athens?
Since the Tunis WSIS mandate was given to the UN Secretary General to convene the IGF, interest on the new emerging entity and its possible effects on the IG debate has been allegedly high. But as time is approaching when the IGF inaugural meeting will start its activities in Athens, Greece, now, almost 10 days before its first—ever meeting, participation of all stakeholders and key actors in the meeting has proved to be even more than expected in the first place. Approximately 1300 participants are estimated to attend the workings of the meeting, one third of which are state representatives (84 different delegations of countries), while the other two thirds consist of representatives from the civil society and the private (business) sector.

How Internet Balkanization Will Change How We Browse the Web
As absurd as that sounds, the regionalization of the Internet could become a very real future, according to a United Nations official. “People are concerned about whether the system we have now will also work five years from now,” Nitin Desai, chair of the UN-led IGF, told BBC News.

Spamhaus Litigation Update - Court Declines to Issue Order Against ICANN or Tucows (news release)
The Court explained that the relief e360 sought was too broad to be warranted under the circumstances. First, the Court noted that since there is no indication that ICANN or Tucows acted in concert with Spamhaus and second, the Court stated that a suspension of www.spamhaus.org would cut off all lawful online activities of Spamhaus, not just those that are in contravention of the injunction the Court previously issued against Spamhaus.

us: FBI director wants ISPs to track users
FBI Director Robert Mueller on Tuesday called on Internet service providers to record their customers' online activities, a move that anticipates a fierce debate over privacy and law enforcement in Washington next year. ... It's not clear exactly what a data retention law would require. One proposal would go beyond Internet providers and require registrars to maintain records too.
