First World Information Society Day focuses on WSIS
implementation (news release)
The first World Information Society Day will be
commemorated on 17 May 2006 to mark the inception of
the International Telecommunication Union in 1865,
over 140 years ago. On this important occasion, the
first ITU World Information Society Award will be
presented to two distinguished and eminent
personalities whose outstanding personal contributions
have furthered the cause of building a more inclusive
and equitable Information Society and helped close the
digital divide. The inaugural ITU Award will be given
to President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal and Professor
Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director of Grameen Bank,
Bangladesh.

Internet Governance and Regulation: The Future of the
Internet - and How to Stop It
The lecture, Professor Jonathan Zittrain's Inaugural
Lecture for Oxford University, will propose a theory
about what lies around the corner for the Internet,
how to avoid it, and how to study and affect the
future of the internet using the distributed power of
the network itself, using privacy as a signal example.

Neutrality of the Net
Net Neutrality is an international issue. In some
countries it is addressed better than others. (In
France, for example, I understand that the layers are
separated, and my colleague in Paris attributes
getting 24Mb/s net, a phone with free international
dialing and digital TV for 30euros/month to the
resulting competition.) In the US, there have been
threats to the concept, and a wide discussion about
what to do. That is why, though I have written and
spoken on this many times, I blog about it now.

Internet Governance ? A Framework WSIS to IGF, and
beyond by David Allen
Abstract: Here we investigate a framework for the
world?s Internet governance regime. This framework
combines what are ordinarily considered to be two
opposites: stability, on the one side; and innovation,
on the other. Regimes from around the world serve as
examples. Ultimately, we apply some lessons learned to
the new Internet Governance Forum, also to expansion
of participation in UN affairs, and finally of course
to ?Net governance itself. What do we hope you ?take
away? from this? That you will begin to ?think across
time? in this policy question; that you will be
prepared to deal with the reality of human behavior,
apparently hard wired into us; and that you can be
receptive to innovations in theory ? in other words,
to internalize a framework that describes how already
you live your daily life.

Stuart Lawley wants to create a new Internet
neighborhood for the adult-entertainment industry:
dot-xxx. The 43-year-old British entrepreneur believes
the new three-letter ending for Web-site addresses
would help protect children from online pornography,
by making it easier to filter such material. He also
hopes to make a pile of money by collecting fees for
registering dot-xxx sites.

since 1994, compared with 1.2 million .COM domain
names, according to comments by China Internet Network

Scientologist Tom Cruise has taken the owner of
TomCruise.com to domain name arbitrator WIPO to win it
back. The Hollywood star, and lead of recently
released Mission Impossible III, is a bit slow off the
mark - the domain was registered in November 1996, and
other super-celebs have been going to WIPO for years
trying to win back their namesake domains.

Everyone should have Amy Schrier's problem. For six
months, she resisted selling the domain name Blue.com
for $200,000. Using a formula she devised to fetch the
highest market value for domain names, Schrier
eventually convinced a private party that Blue.com was
worth $500,000. Since the name was sold in March, its
site now includes links to sexual material and airfare
ads.

case shows, technology is pushing companies into trade
mark turf wars. ... Disputes really stepped up a gear
