Anti-Spyware Coalition Releases Documents; Unveils
Agenda
The Anti-Spyware Coalition today released two new "tip
sheets" to help consumers and enterprises better
protect themselves against spyware and unwanted
adware. The coalition also unveiled final plans for an
international workshop slated to take place in Ottawa
on May 16. Coordinated by CDT, the Anti-Spyware
Coalition consists of academics, public interest
advocates and the world's largest distributors of
anti-spyware technology.

MIT Antispam Confab Looks Beyond Filters
The fight against spam, phishing and e-mail fraud
should focus on economic incentives and aiding law
enforcement, according to attendees at a conference
examining the problem this week. Speakers at MIT's
2006 Spam Conference were notably cognizant of the
recent proposals of white lists and AOL's Goodmail, a
pay per e-mail service offering preferential treatment
in e-mail delivery for marketers.

Operation
The Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General
of California have brought a permanent halt to an
operation that sent millions of spam messages that
violated federal and state laws. The settlement will
bar future violations of the spam laws, will require
the operators to monitor affiliates closely to assure
that they are not violating state and federal laws,
and requires that they give up approximately $475,000
in ill-gotten gains.

With the San Francisco and Philadelphia wireless
debates heating up, it's become clear that there's
been a lack of attention paid to the undermining of
many of the freedoms we've grown to expect (and
perhaps take for granted) on the Internet. With this
