Why XXX .xxx ?
It looks like the .xxx Top Level Domain has been
side-lined again. It seems ironic that while the US is
regarded (by Americans anyway) as having invented the
internet, the US controlled ICAAN has been so slow in
developing and authorizing new TLDs. The .xxx domain
was previously shelved last year after a prolonged
campaign by conservative Christian groups and last
week it was delayed again at an ICANN meeting in New
Zealand.

The U.S. Government has extended the current phase of
ICANN's IANA contract for six more months.
Importantly, this is not a renewal of the contract,
simply an extension of the existing contract. The

zehnmillionsten Second Level Domain in der

Alternative Rootzonen für DNS bislang wenig genutzt
Das bei den Internet-Verwaltern der ICANN für
Sicherheitsfragen zuständige Security and Advisory
Committee (SSAC) empfiehlt, zügig die Möglichkeiten
nicht-englischer Top Level Domains zu testen. In einem
Bericht zu alternativen Rootzonen (PDF-Datei) schreibt
das Komitee, bislang hätten kommerziell motivierte
alternative Rootzone-Anbieter für erweiterte
DNS-Adressräume kaum Nutzer anziehen können; das werde
auch so bleiben. Der Grund sei, dass Nutzer mit
erheblichen Einschränkungen bei der Erreichbarkeit der
alternativen Top Level Domains (TLD) rechnen müssten.
Das gleiche gelte für verschiedene Rebellen-Roots,
deren Entstehung durch die Ablehnung von ICANNs
bislang zähen TLD-Zulassungsverfahren motiviert sind.
