Who Control's the Internet
A discussion on the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation's Radio National Late Night Live programme
on who control's the internet, and the way forward.
The guests agree that ICANN's control is the "least
worst option" for the time being. They also discuss
Google and China, with Becky Hogge commenting she is
sympathetic to Google acquiescing to China's demands
although she wouldn't want to have a couple of tea
with the people there! Guests are Becky Hogge,
Managing Editor of Open Democracy which is an online
magazine of global politics and democracy and Kenneth
Neil Cukier who covers techonology and regulatory
issues for The Economist. The programme is available
to download for at least one week from broadcast -
till 8 February.

Opinion: ICANN, the ITU, WSIS, and Internet Governance
by Geoff Huston, APNIC (03/2005)
This opinion piece looks at the various range of views
about ICANN and its rationale and role over its brief
history. Of course, no look at Internet Governance
would be complete without also looking at the role of
the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), as
well as the broader background to this topic. It is a
large topic and it has already been the catalyst for
numerous articles.

Television For Sale...The Domain, That Is
Television.com was originally registered in 1995 by
Minnesota resident Mike O'Connor, a self-described
"tech-geek turned business-leader type person." As he
describes the process on his personal Web site, he
registered televison.com (along with a number of other
names) early in the history of the public Internet.

Netcraft February 2006 Web Server Survey
In the February 2006 survey we received responses from
76,184,000 sites, an increase of 933K from January's
total. This month's survey finds different trends
emerging in hostnames and active sites. Apache
continues its strong growth with an increase of 1.3
million hostnames for the month, adding nearly a full
point to its commanding market share lead. The active
sites data shows a very different result, with Windows
servers gaining 185K active sites, while Apache adds
just 14K.

IDNs and IE7 and the Coming Storm
If you're brave, today you can finally download the
Internet Explorer 7 public beta. Why should you be
interested? Not because the browser's wonderful. It
isn't -- initial reports are that it's not ready for
prime-time. But you might be interested to know that
as of today, users of IE will be able to use IDNs.
Many other browsers are already IDN-capable, including
Firefox, but most people in the world use Explorer.

Internet Wars
A couple of days ago the BBC reported that a document
called the Information Operations Roadmap (PDF) had
been declassified and that it contained some pretty
interesting stuff. The American dominance over the
Internet, recently manifested by its unwillingness to
hand over some of the critical control to
UN-organizations, may have another side to it.

A Pragmatic Report on IPv4 Address Space Consumption
by Tony Hain, Cisco Systems
When I interact with people from all around the world
discussing IPv6, there continue to be questions about
the projected lifetime for IPv4. This article presents
consumption rate and lifetime projections based on
publicly available Internet Assigned Numbers Authority
(IANA) data. In addition, there is discussion about
why the widely quoted alternative projection may be
flawed, thus leading everyone to believe we have much
more time than we might.

The Wisdom of Buying Many Domain Names
Occasionally, friends of mine ask me if they should
consider buying lots and lots of domain names as a
marketing strategy to drive more traffic to their web
sites. They theorize that many domains names will cast
a wider net on the web for prospective site visitors.
Is this an effective online marketing strategy? In
most cases, no.

Meinung, man brauche neue Domains. Als Argumente dafür
werden Wettbewerb, Innovation und viele neue Bewerber
angeführt.
