this porn invasion is legal." Hockenberry also

if the porn spammer is based in the U.S., "all he has
to do is write the phrase 'sexually oriented' on the
mail and it's all perfectly legal."

uk: Supreme Court Judgement on Peer-to-Peer Networks
has Implications Across the Globe (reg req'd)
The US Supreme Court gave its judgement on a critical
question of contributory and vicarious (or secondary)
copyright infringement at the end of June 2005. It was
decided that the makers of software and the providers
of a network, both of which were widely used for
copying copyright material, were potentially liable
for contributory and vicarious infringement. This
judgement may well affect the way that courts across
the world decide issues of secondary infringement in
the online environment.

China and the internet: Imperial bubble?
CHINA'S leading internet search engine, Baidu.com, is
named after a 900-year-old Song Dynasty love poem
about the search for a beautiful woman. Baidu's
literal meaning??hundreds of times??represents the
tortuous quest for the ideal. Baidu's owners,
including (with a 22% stake) its chairman, Robin Li,
did not have to work that hard to achieve financial
bliss. Just five and a half years after founding
Baidu, they listed it on America's NASDAQ exchange
only to see the stock soar by 354% on its August 5th
debut, the largest first-day gain since the dotcom
bubble. At its closing price on that day of nearly
$123 a share, up from the flotation price of $27,
Baidu was worth nearly $4 billion, more than any other
Chinese internet firm and almost 3,000 times last
year's profit.

us: Will Sticks Lick Broadband Fix?
When Bob Dylan sang "Time passes slowly up here in the
mountains," he wasn't referring to the speed of Web
pages loading on his computer. But this month I've had
plenty of time to think about that Dylan lyric, as
well as re-read the paper and stare at the hummingbird
that flutters outside my window at my western
Massachusetts retreat. This is dial-up country, and my
browser refreshes in slo-mo, my mailbox fills up in
dribbles and two coats of paint can dry before a
PowerPoint file downloads. Though the Berkshires are
only hours away from superwired citadels like New York
and Boston, in terms of telecommunications this might
as well be Nepal.
