nz: Hector Protector Launched by Internet Safety Group
Hector Protector has been created by the NetSafe
Programme of New Zealand to help keep children safe
online. The function of this button is to give a child
the ability to quickly cover the screen of the
computer with a screensaver of Hector when they
encounter material that frightens or upsets them. With
a click of the button, the problem is covered over by
Hector until a trusted adult can come and deal with
the situation. Hector also gives children very
positive feedback for using the button and talking
with an adult about the problem.

Launch of a European awareness-raising network, INSAFE
The 18th and 19th November, Prague saw the launch of a
European awareness-raising network, INSAFE, to
confront a growing challenge on national, European and
international agendas. The creation of the network is
an important step in the European Commission’s Safer
Internet Programme (SIP). In a double-edged action to
coordinate the numerous, multi-facetted initiatives
springing up daily throughout the world, it is matched
by the launching of national Safer Internet awareness
nodes that coordinate actions at the national level.
INSAFE aims to optimise European added value through
the exchange and pooling of expertise and resources
between nodes and other key players across Europe and
internationally. It is led by European Schoolnet, in
partnership with the Cyberspace Research Unit of the
University of Central Lancashire (UK) and the
Norwegian Board of Film Classification. The initiative
is backed by the Council of Europe.

au: Would the 'Real' Casey Donovan stand up? (reg

The whole "fiasco" with the Casey Donovan website
(remember her? she won Australian Idol last weekend)
need never have happened. In fact there are a number
of factors that conspired to make it happen, some
under Telstra's control, some not. For those
completely in the dark about this - Telstra rushed an
advertisement into the newspapers promoting her
brand-new website and the fact that fans could
download her first song. Unfortunately, the web
address they posted pointed to a very adult-oriented
site of particular interest to gay men.

us: The FTC Authentication Summit
The Federal Trade Commission and NIST had a two-day
Authentication Summit on Nov 9-10 in Washington DC.
When they published their report explaining their
decision not to create a National Do Not Email
Registry, the FTC identified lack of e-mail
authentication as one of the reasons that it wouldn't
work, and the authentication summit was part of their
process to get some sort of authentication going. At
the time the summit was scheduled, the IETF MARID
group was still active and most people expected it to
endorse Microsoft's Sender-ID in some form, so the
summit would have been mostly about Sender-ID. Since
MARID didn't do that, the summit had a broader and
more interesting agenda.

Bytes and Bullets By Lawrence Lessig
A while back a federal court declared that the
manufacturers of the most popular forms of
peer-to-peer file-sharing technology are not liable
for copyright infringement committed by people using
their technology. Congress immediately sprang into
action by taking up legislation to reverse the court's
ruling. The goal is to make it clear that p2p
manufacturers are indeed liable for copyright
violations committed with their products. No doubt
many hope this will drive the p2p companies out of
business.
