ICANN Settles Budget Battle
After months of debate and negotiations, the overseer
of the Internet's domain-name system has gained
approval for a budget that doubles its spending.

ICANN plans to open seven offices outside the US over

AfriNIC Moves Forward and Promotes Regional
Integration
AfriNIC has taken another step towards formal
recognition as an official Regional Internet number
Registry (RIR) with the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Board announcing
its provisional recognition, the last stage before
full recognition. AfriNIC has begun managing Internet
number resources for the Africa region, including IPv4
and IPv6 addresses.

Keeping The Web Alive
Who knew that Vint Cerf, a father of the Internet,
dabbles in poetry? Cerf, who co-wrote the original
Internet protocol that started it all, has been
writing poems about technology and the Web for years.
Now, in addition to books on the history of
cyberspace, he says he wants to write a book of puns
and jokes with a working title of Rhyme and
Punishment. Alas, that will have to take a back seat
for now to Cerf's efforts to preserve his beloved
ICANN, responsible for doling out domain names.
Founded six years ago this month, ICANN has been
criticized for trying to exercise too much power over
the free-spirited Web. Moreover, it's battling to meet
some tough financial deadlines by Dec. 31, 2004.

Telecom Standardization Assembly in Florianopolis
darauf geeinigt, Entwicklungsländer mehr zu
unterstützen und die Geschlechterfrage mehr zu
beachten. An erster Stelle der Zusammenfassung der
Entscheidungen stellte die 1865 für den klassischen
Telefoniebereich gegründete Organisation allerdings
mehrere Entscheidungen rund um das Thema Internet. Die
ITU positioniert sich vor dem zweiten Weltgipfel der
Informationsgesellschaft für die nächste Runde in der
Debatte, wer im Cyberspace regiert.
