Yahoo must face French legal action
In a decision that could expose U.S.-based Web sites
to free speech laws of other nations, a federal
appeals court on Monday found that Yahoo could not
escape legal action in France for violating a French
ban on the sale of Nazi-related items.

Looking Behind the "Great Firewall" of China
A new bulletin from the OpenNet Initiative (a research
partnership of the Citizen Lab, the Berkman Center,
and the Advanced Network Research Group) peels back
some of the layers of Internet censorship in China.
ONI researchers conducted a probe of the filtering
practices of the two most popular search engines in
China, Baidu.com and Yisou.com, and found a complex
matrix of content-blocking that extends beyond
filtering search results. In searching for various
combinations of the words "free" and "Tibet," the
study reveals that certain searches found no results
while others do lead to websites, most of which are
then blocked through upstream filtering. This initial
study sheds some light on what might be the most
advanced regime of Internet filtering.

United States and censorship
The world's dominant Internet player, the United
States sees itself as the champion of online free
expression. But US legislation has increasingly
trampled on the civil liberties of Internet users
since the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United
States. And US senators, while launching a programme
to combat Internet censorship worldwide, refuse to
rein in US companies that help equip dictatorships
with online surveillance and filtering equipment.
