A NEW REMEDY FOR BLOATING AND FLATULENCE?
If you experience irregular bloating, flatulence, or other
unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, you may have
fructose intolerance. A study published in the June 2003
issue of the "American Journal of Gastroenterology"
suggests the intolerance is a common and under-recognized
problem.

Researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of
Medicine studied 183 people who had unexplained and
undiagnosed digestive symptoms, such as those associated
with fructose intolerance. After drinking a solution equal
to the amount of fructose found in three glasses of apple
juice, 75 percent of the participants experienced abdominal
pain. Of those testing positive to a fructose breath test
measuring levels of methane and hydrogen gases, almost 90
percent had elevated levels of hydrogen, and 11 percent had
higher than average levels of methane. Methane and hydrogen
appear when people are unable to absorb fructose in the
small intestine; instead, it travels to the colon, where it
ferments and releases hydrogen and methane gases-the cause
of pain, bloating, and flatulence.

Fructose is found in abundance in juices, sodas,
high-fructose corn syrup, honey, apples, pears, peaches,
and oranges. With the larger portions of food that
Americans now consume, fructose intolerance has become more
common. If you experience symptoms, ask your doctor for a
fructose breath test, limit high-fructose foods, and leave
enough time between consumption of foods with high-fructose
levels to help avoid discomfort.
