| Jim Rutt as President pledged to the internet community a periodic
Rutt report. His first one was WONDERFUL. What a breath of fresh air. that
was the last one he every made. In june the pressure was put on and there
was a peiod of jockying.... David Holtzman and others were making noise
that NSI would put up their own root servers. Upon which holtzman was greeted
with a threat by the federal government to nationalize them and take physical
control of them away from NSI.
SAIC by this times as owner had stock NSI stock worth well over a billion bucks. Now what would a fed take over have done to the market cap guys. Anyway congress demanded hearings on the subject is ICANN out of contol. Jim utt was a starr witness. The hearings were on or about july 20 1999. About 4 pm my phone rang it was brock meeks. Meeks: They handed Rutt his head on a platter. I called Jim at his office after five pm the same day and got through to him. he warn't in a good mood. He was the only nsi oicial who had ever gone to capital hill to testify without being prepped by phil sbarbaro. Jim fumed to me that he had been misled by a mysterious group of "handlers" from inside NSI. led down the pomrose path and right over the cliff. less than 2 weeks later came the mysterious meeting at the hayes adams hotel. Is it true jim that you and brian reid haave know each other since grade school? I didn't find out about the meeting until November. But my documentation of it has been on my web site in great detail for more than 3 years and has never been challenged. In a sentence or two two ibm vice presidents laid out in front of you, farber, reid, kahn and the saic vp that was responsible for NSI thatt NSI better play ball. As you just said signals were sent.... negotiations began.... and NSI capitualted to ICANN at the end of sept 1999. NSI got a continuation of its monopoly and inreturn ICANN collected 2.5 million dollars a year from NSI for letting NSI alone. In my opinion the sleaziest of deals and one that i am not necessarily blaming you for Jim. as far as i could tell you ran into a buzzz saw. but enquiring minds would sure as hell like to know what happened to you in june and july 99. |
