Courts poised to decide Internet `borders'
Two cases nicely foreshadow the major trends of the coming
year Ñ the U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 3 declined to
intervene in a copyright dispute involving questions of
jurisdiction on the Internet, and a Norwegian court last
week acquitted an Oslo teenager of criminal wrongdoing for
creating a software program that defeated the encryption
found on DVDs.

The Law vs. The Internet
When the Supreme Court ruled yesterday to uphold a 1998 law
extending the term of copyrights, technology news sites and
message boards went into high gear. At its heart, the case
was about money and the intellectual property interests of
media giants and individual artists alike. And it
highlighted key differences among new media giants (often
huge conglomerates owning numerous copyrights), and the
consumers (and their allies in the consumer electronics
industry) who pay to access intellectual property.

Huge rise in complaints about child porn sites
The number of complaints about child pornography sites on
the Internet rose 64 per cent to 17,868 in 2002, according
to the Internet Watch Foundation.

Pornographic ads Subject to Crackdown
The Ministry of Information and Communication said Thursday
that following the January 19 implementation of a law
governing the sending of pornographic advertisements
through the Internet to cellular phones, it will mount an

Hong Kong law accused of censoring internet
The Hong Kong Government’s proposals to implement a
controversial law prohibiting “treason, secession, sedition
and subversion or theft of trade secrets” against the
Central People’s Government of China has raised concerns
among civil liberties advocates, who fear that the law
could result in internet restrictions similar to those
applied in China.

On-line pricing error by US hotel chain
When the web site of US hotel giant Starwood offered luxury
bungalows at a South Pacific resort for the erroneous price
of $85 instead of $850 per night, the bookings flooded in.
However, at least 136 people were told that their orders
will not be fulfilled.
