Contempt Claim Brought in Internet Libel War
Two defendants embroiled in an Internet libel suit with
their former employer are now demanding contempt
proceedings for opposing counsel at Orrick, Herrington &
Sutcliffe and Pillsbury Winthrop, arguing they are
misrepresenting a court order. The motion for contempt is
the latest shot fired in the suit Varian Medical and Varian
Semiconductor filed against two former employees for
posting thousands of Internet messages about Varian.

Censorship and the Internet
The Department of Internal Affairs' Inspectors have the
role of investigating New Zealand Internet websites and
newsgroups and enforcing censorship legislation. We take a
proactive role in prosecuting New Zealanders who trade
objectionable material via the Internet. If a publication
is categorised as 'objectionable' it is automatically
banned by the Films, Videos, and Publications
Classification Act 1993.

What changes will be made to the European Community's
audiovisual policy? Work programme for reviewing the
"Television without frontiers" Directive
On a proposal from Viviane Reding, the Commissioner
responsible for culture and audiovisual affairs, the
College today adopted a report on the application of the
"Television without Frontiers" (TVSF) Directive, together
with a work programme for 2003 aimed at reviewing the
Directive. The latter was adopted in 1989 and amended in
1997. The 2003 work programme will consist of a series of
consultations with a view to arriving at operational
conclusions on the relevance bearing in mind economic and
technological developments of the existing Community rules,
in particular concerning matters such as access to events
of major importance to society, the promotion of cultural
diversity, television advertising and the protection of
minors.
